The Shadow of the Freeblade
Salen Freeblade was born into a legacy of iron and ink. As the second son of Valara and Renald, the legendary commanders of the Freeblades of Agahven, his life was defined by the walls of the Citadel in the merchant-city of Golden Bay. While his elder brother was groomed to one day lead the mercenary company, Salen was the “contingency”—trained with the same brutal efficiency but granted just enough neglect to find his own path. Under his mother’s watchful eye, he mastered the geometry of the blade, while his father drilled him in the cold logic of logistics and the sanctity of contract law.
Yet, Salen’s heart was never in the barracks. He found his sanctuary in the library’s dust and the tangled roots of the nearby forests. It was there he met Gloria, an elderly herbalist and wise woman who saw a kindred, quiet spirit in the boy. In secret, she doted on him as the son she had lost, teaching him that the world was governed by more than just steel and coin. Under her guidance, Salen tapped into the subtle, earthy rhythms of witchcraft—a power that felt far more honest than the rigid discipline of his family.
For thirty years, the Freeblades had been the gilded shield of the High Exarch of Golden Bay, maintaining a peace that seemed unshakable. But when the rival city-state of Oakhaven brought its engines of war to the gates, the “unshakable” resolve of the Freeblades finally cracked.
As the siege wore on and the city’s supplies dwindled, Valara and Renald made a choice that would forever stain the Freeblade name. They didn’t choose a glorious final stand; they chose survival. In exchange for a king’s ransom and a guarantee of safe passage, the Freeblades struck a secret bargain with Oakhaven. On a moonless night, while the citizens slept, Salen’s family opened the postern gates to a cadre of Oakhaven assassins.
The Freeblades marched out of the city in perfect, silent formation, abandoning their posts just as the screams began within the Citadel. Salen, confused and told only that the contract had been “nullified for tactical reasons,” watched from the rear of the column as the city he called home began to burn. It wasn’t until they were leagues away, dividing the blood-money in a hidden camp, that he realized the depth of the betrayal. His family hadn’t just ended a contract; they had sold their honor to buy their lives.
Overcome with a burning shame, Salen abandoned his family under the cover of night. He took nothing but his basic gear and the hidden knowledge Gloria had gifted him. Now, he travels the world as a witch for hire, desperate to wash the stain of the Freeblade name from his soul. He seeks to be the guardian his family refused to be—not for a noble’s coin, but for the sake of the innocent people his parents were so willing to discard.
